Tim Burton

Tim Burton is an american Director, Producer and writer of dark and quirky-themed animations, now Tim has completely changed the way some people look at animation. He has changed the animation industry i thing as everyone thinks it should be a happy and cheerful type of animation and along came Tim and he created more of a dark side to claymation and this changed the style of this animation all together. Some well known pieces of his work include: The Nightmare before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice and Frankenweenie.

All of Tim work tends to have a dark twist to it, it almost has a surreal feel to it. This is because all his characters and story's are out side the normal animation that people expect from animators. Tims latest piece of work is Frankenweenie and this is about a boy who's dog dies and so the boy decides to put him back together and bring him back to life. The basic story line or summary of the movie is that its like Frankenstein but with a pet dog.
This type of animation is different from other peoples work like Nick Park as this is a dark and more supposed 'real' feel to animation.

Tim techniques that he uses are that he creates a story board of each scene and then the animators are given three day to prepare for the scene. They film about a 1 minute a week and have 24 frames per second. Another thing that Tim uses is that he has 20 to 30 lights on each set in order to help the director and animators create different effects with each scene or movement.
There are 15 animators at once working on on scene or set to make sure that everything id perfect otherwise if the camera moves or if one light fails it can kill the whole shot and they will have to film it all over again.

Here are some examples of Tims Work:

The way Tim has developed this is that on each set he gets each animator to play around with the texture on the models or the sets and scenery in order to give the illustration more of a 'real' feel or effect. Each puppet that is on set has a Armature inside to give in movement for the animators who composer the shot and put the final piece together.
All types of stop motion helps bring objects that don't move to life, another thing that helps Tims work stand out from others is that he has over 400 heads and mouths for each character as each time they speak the animators want to make sure they capture every word the character says otherwise the animation could look shoddy.

All in all i like the work that Tim does however I'm yet to watch a single film he has made, i think form the look of it that his work is brilliant as it stands out from other peoples work as his work is more dark and has a different side to animation in general. With Tim having 60 characters, 15 animators working at once on each set and over 250 set in total i think Tim has changed the way people animator as he produces animation on a mass audience scale. Tim says that on each project the animator becomes the character this shows that the animators has to think about how the shot is going to be seen by the view and it these small details that helps make a good animation.
